11:00 – BYOD – Consumerization in the Business World; What’s It Mean to Me?
Lately, the topic of BYOD (bring your own device) is making much more penetration in the business world. Consumerization of computing devices and smartphones is making the enterprise that much harder to manage. The majority of my I.T. career has been centered around the academic world where students were bringing their own computing devices every year. This strategy has several positives, and a whole lot of negative. What does it mean when you allow one of these BYOD’s on your enterprise network doing business related transactions? If we do let our users bring their personal devices, are their security standards and awareness up to par?
We will explore two major issues: a) Smartphones/tablets – what’s really on there? Do you know? What happens when you lose it? Whose responsibility is it to update the OS? b) Social Awareness - we trust people way too much. We really need to wear our tin foil hat a lot more often.
I will show several quick demonstrations that will allow me to obtain key information to allow me to get at more sensitive information. This is a huge dilemma for BYOD, as the I.T. office will most often not have any kind of controls or filters at the computing level.
Presenter: Jer Kong, Information Security Analyst , ISPRO
1:00 – New Free Security Tools for LSPs from ISPRO
Tony Townsend will talk about three new tools that will help LSPs keep systems at UVa secure. Three tools are available now. Find out about the FireEye monitoring devices to stop malware before it hits your users, scan your web applications for security holes with the IBM Rational App Scan, and look for specific device problems with Nessus general device scanner. We’ll also take a look at upcoming improvements to the notification and remediation processes that should make security easier for LSPs.
Presenter: Tony Townsend, Security Analyst, ISPRO

An answer for mobile users is a necessity in today’s world. John Rhea will discuss the basics of that hallowed buzzphrase “Responsive Design” and how to implement it in your projects. Doug Chestnut will then discuss how to implement cross platform mobile apps using your already honed web skills.
Presenters: John Rhea, Webmaster Curry School of Education; Doug Chestnut, Web Programmer, UVA Library
10:00 – Social Media: Small Bets; Big Wins
We all know social media platforms matter; higher education can’t afford to ignore the digital spaces in which their students, faculty, staff, alumni and potential community members already converse. The challenge is more often one of resource allocation: How do you secure social media “big wins” while under a time/labor/budget crunch? A collaborative effort between Darden’s Communication & Marketing and Admissions departments, join Valerie Harness and Fareine Benz as they share how small bets led to big wins for the Darden School of Business and how you might benefit from some of their favorite tools of the trade.
Presenters: Valerie Harness, Web & Social Media Manager, Communication & Marketing for UVA Darden School of Busines; Fareine Benz, Admissions & Marketing Specialist, Admissions for UVA Darden School of Business; Ray Nedzel, Webmaster, School of Medicine

Moderator: Doug Chestnut, Web Programmer, UVA Library
1:00 – WordPress and Drupal: Lessons Learned, Problems Solved
More and more, WordPress and Drupal have entered higher education as the current open source content management tools of choice. Yet, aside from sometimes emotional debates about one system’s inherent superiority over the other, there is little objective discussion of when Drupal or WordPress makes sense and why. In this session, developers and users of Drupal and WordPress at UVa will discuss their choice of either platform, the problem it addressed, how their choice solved the problem, and lessons learned. Those with questions about the advantages of either platform are welcome to ask questions. This is not a debate, but rather a moderated discussion of how each of these open source tools has been used to address specific web needs for the University. Discussion will be moderated by Cathy Finn-Derecki of the School of Medicine.
Panel: Lynne Bell, Director of Development Communications, Curry School Foundation; Carey Hill, Web Developer, UVA Office of Communications; Dave Moody, Webmaster, Health Sciences Library; Anson Parker, Web Developer, Health Sciences Library; Moderator: Cathy Finn-Derecki, Web Developer, School of Medicine

1:00 – Talking Windows with your users – Comparing Windows 7 and 8
Much has been written in the tech press about Windows 8. I decided to go all-in several months ago and upgrade my primary computer to find out first-hand what all the hype was about. In this presentation I will give a brief demonstration of how typical computing tasks are similar or different, highlighting some of the improvements and weaknesses. I will also discuss how I expect to see Windows 8 impact our environment.
